Can Mormons drink coffee?
According to God's guidance in the Word of Wisdom, Mormons are advised to avoid coffee. Mormons, more properly referred to as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, believe they are divinely counseled not to drink coffee. In 1833, Church prophet Joseph Smith received a revelation from God regarding health, known as the Word of Wisdom. This revelation advises which foods and drink are good for the body and which substances should be avoided. It lists "hot drinks" as one of the harmful substances, saying they are "not for the body or belly." Yes. Mormons, more properly referred to as Latter-day Saints or members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, unequivocally affirm themselves to be Christian, or in other words, followers of Jesus Christ. Christianity is a religious belief centered on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and the belief that salvation comes only through Him. While many Christian denominations exist, their creeds generally hold in common Jesus of Nazareth as the Son of God whose coming was prophesied in the Old Testament. Latter-day Saints and other Christians believe Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem, ministered in Jerusalem and surrounding regions until His persecution and death on the cross as well as His subsequent resurrection from the dead as a glorified being. They also believe Jesus, as the prophesied Messiah, was anointed by God the Father to be the Savior of humanity. It is also commonly believed Jesus lives in Heaven with God the Father and will return to Earth in the latter-days—an event known as the Second Coming. The core conviction of Christianity is that by following the gospel of Jesus Christ and receiving His grace, one may be redeemed, or reconciled, to God and receive salvation in the life after death.... Mormon men can lawfully have one wife. The practice of polygamy (polygyny or plural marriage), the marriage of more than one woman to the same man, was practiced by Church members from the 1830s to the early 1900s. The Church, properly referred to as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, issued a manifesto in 1890, which led to the eventual end of their practice of polygamy after the Church's fourth president Wilford Woodruff received a revelation from God. Between 1890 and 1904, a small number of plural marriages continued to be performed, mostly outside of the United States. In 1904, the Church, led at the time by Joseph F. Smith, issued a second manifesto. It proclaimed that anyone taking additional wives would be excommunicated from the Church. Existing plural marriages and families were not automatically dissolved, but remained into the 1950s.... Read moreDo Mormons drink?

General Authorities leave their careers when they are called into full time Church service. When they do so, they are given a living allowance which enables them to focus all of their time on serving in the Church. This practice allows for far more church members on a worldwide basis to be considered for a calling to serve as a General Authority, rather than limiting considerations to only those who may be financially independent. The living allowance is uniform for all General Authorities.
